Big And Tall Men Need Style Too

As the wife of a big man, I feel his pain as I am the one who does the shopping. While plus size stores for women are easily found these days, the offerings for a larger than normal man are pretty sparse, and the big and tall sizes often come at a price. Since I also sew, I am well aware that the extra inches of fabric necessary to make larger clothing do not correspond to the increase in price. In short, the the big and tall men who need clothing are getting a bum deal.

Why do people believe that just because someone is large, they feel no need to look fashionable? Although men are not as vocal as women, they feel frustrated when the only offerings they see in the stores are ugly prints, knit shirts, sweat pants, and “old man pants.” A big man wants the same kind of clothing his smaller counterpart wears. They want good looking jeans, leather jackets, nice suits, and dress pants too.

There are some stores that have pretty nice clothing for the big and tall men. Big and Tall Casual Male is one of those. Of course you don’t find one in every mall, but they do have a catalog for online shopping. They carry things the average size man takes for granted like underwear, belts, socks, pajamas, and robes. If you have a waist size over 40, you won’t find a belt to fit you in a department store. Socks are often too tight at the top, and while underwear is available, there are not many styles. Big and Tall Casual Male does carry designer clothing and yes, it is expensive. I shop at the outlet store and they gave me a shopping card that offers unadvertised discounts. This is one way to dress my handsome husband in the style he deserves.

A less pricey alternative is the King Size catalog. They have everything from underwear to work clothing to nice suits and sport coats. I have to mention that my husband was a horse trainer for many years and finding suitable outdoor clothing like snowsuits and rain gear was next to impossible until I found King Size and Wear Guard catalogs. In addition to clothing they carry wide width shoes, also hard to find in stores. The quality of the clothing in King Size is good. Most pants and jeans come without a hem, but you can have them hemmed at an extra cost. They carry dress and casual shirts in a variety of neck sizes and sleeve lengths. They also have very nice jackets, suits, and sweaters. If you have a teenager who wears big and tall clothing, this catalog has everything a teen might like to wear in larger sizes.

Things have improved in the last few years, but I think men’s big and tall clothing still needs to be more available. You can walk into nearly any mall and find a Lane Bryant or Fashion Bug carrying women’s plus size clothes, but men seldom have that option. I think one reason for that is that women have risen up in recent years and demanded fashionable clothes in their size. Men need to do the same. More Americans are large sized than not, so shouldn’t the majority rule? Come on, give the guys a break. They want to look good too.
